This is an area I am using to write my experiences as I go through the steps for each assignment for Media Design. I am calling it captain's log because of my picture next to the costa cruise ship.

Technical difficulty. UGH! I have been trying to get my less than started web page live and cannot connect to the server. Oh well, I will post the renditions of designs I went through this week. If photoshop was not such a PA, I could have spent the rest of this week figuring out the dang server. Am I frustrated? just a little bit...

Okay, time to start the website process.
I have decided to create an expressive website. My goal at the end of this MA program is to fully execute this site and eventually push to potentially create a network or tv show with the same concept. What is it you ask?
Musicians Making Noise is the name I am calling it now. A portal for musicians to feature music, songs, videos that are cause-related. Think the recent Green Day, Bon Jovi and Fall Out Boy videos. The site will allow musicians to feature their art along with charitable organizations. It will be a resource for educating people about issues around the world. And lastly it will be a destination for people to participate and and take action.
Here are three sites I would try to model after:
http://www.habitat.org/
http://www.one.org/
http://www.liveearthmusic.org/
All three sites are very good with their quality of design. I love the design of the LiveEarth site and the content is amazing. But I find the site a little difficult to navigate. The one part I like about it is the ability to embed their content to another site, something I really want to have my site do.
The information architecture of the ONE site is great. The most important and compelling media is first and foremost, but the nav-bar allows you to quickly go to wherever you need to go.
The habitat site has had a longer life and does a very good job at providing lots of relative content. What I like most about this site is the ease of donating.

I guess I should arrange my posts so that you see the newest date.
I am ashamed I have not been doing my assignment of writing my progress in this blog, so quick update - finalizing the film was a pain in the butt. Not only does it take so long for the film to render, but the flash animation I spent days on did not upload. I am definitely taking the workshop on Flash this weekend! After hours, I finally got it to at least be in a hi-res DVD format. Presenting in class drives me insane - I am always embarrassed! Regardless of the flaws in the film (particularly the lighting and sound), I am pretty proud of the work and look forward to the next one.

The photography was difficult not only because I had not done it before, but because of the task of taking pictures of people on a NYC subway. Photoshopping the images later became even more difficult because I did not understand Adobe Photoshop. A quick trip to a workshop after class took care of that, but I feel I lack the artistic ability or even the "eye" was holding me back.
Recording the Audio tracks was fun, but I recorded way too much and really should spend some more time editing and going through the tracks. Once I put it all together in The Symbol, I still felt it was not clearly what I had envisioned it to be.
Getting behind the camera is where I have felt the most comfortable. The scripting has been a little difficult, so I chose to film something close to real life, short and comedic rather than focus on the train theme. I initially had trouble with iMovie as the newest version, updated to make it easier for users, was difficult to manipulate. My experience with other programs made it hard to work with it. I spent many hours and have gotten somewhat used to it but I plan to purchase Final Cut this week to complete my project.

I have been working all week to learn Adobe After Effects. This has been so far my favorite part of the assignment process. I am hoping to have more time as all I have really done is created an opening credit which I hope to perfect and use as a standard in all my future films.

Assignment: Record specific types of sounds
This is a great example of energy. It was a woman singing in Grand Central Terminal.
This is an example of Mood.
This is an example of situation
This is an example of time.
This is an example of dialogue. I wanted to make it a little more challenging and actually tried to record people's conversations without them knowing. I chose this one for my assignment because it was the most difficult as it was taken in an elevator. And of course, the fact that I don't understand a word is just perfect - we still know that it is dialogue!
Sandy woke up in her tiny New York apartment early on a Friday morning. She had a dream that seemed so real. But because she had been having nightmares since she moved in three days earlier, she just let it go. Until she got up and walked to the bathroom - only to find no bathroom there.
She was awake, but still in a dream. Physically all alone, but accompanied by a voice.
She was fully dressed and had a bag packed. She did not remember ever packing this bag, but it had a bottle of water, a bag of fruit and nuts and a sweater. The voice was muffled at first, but as she continued to walk toward it, it got louder and clearer.
"go to the subway. take the 4 train. follow the signs."
The voice repeated the message over and over. She continued to walk to where she thought the front door was. Sandy reached out and could feel the handle. She opened it and walked through, ending up on the street outside her apartment staring directly at the subway entrance.
Sandy went down to the station, but did not see any unusual signs in fact there were not even any people in the station.
When all of a sudden, a woman appeared. The voice Sandy had been hearing was now in the form of a beautiful woman, standing across from her on the train.
"Follow the signs," she said. Sandy still did not understand, and she started to get angry with this voice and this woman. When all of a sudden, the mysterious woman flashed a symbol from her chest. Sandy immediately knew this was the sign.
Sandy was quickly transformed into another world or another dream. The noise of the train still filled the air, but all she could see were people wearing the symbol. She was captivated by the beauty of the people, the symbol and became emotional.
The fear and anger quickly started to fade away and Sandy was instantly overwhelmed with extreme feelings of happiness.
The woman and voice disappeared. Sandy was suddenly back on the train with all kinds of people. They too were now happy, smiling and wearing the symbol. What she had not realized before was that she was wearing the symbol the whole time.
Sandy had been lonely trying to find her way into this big, new city, and realized that all she needed was the symbol which made these people happy.
She exited the train and her new friends waved to her saying, "see you again soon."
